For example, a dentist can take x-rays in the office at your next checkup and can utilize AI to identify suspicious areas and possible abnormalities. This aids the dentist by focusing their review on the questionable areas.  After the exam, the dentist can update with findings they confirmed (or identified as incorrect) that are then fed back to the model to improve its performance. Eye doctors can similarly capture the results of your exams including glaucoma that can help identify other health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and more. This comprehensive approach drives efficiency savings for valuable resources, improves overall patient care to detect earlier and diagnose faster, and contributes to advancing medical innovation for patients, hospitals and doctors themselves.

Clinical Data and Cohort Analysis

Clinical data management involves the collection, integration, and organization of patient data collected in cohorts that is gathered during clinical trials or other healthcare-related activities. Traditionally, this process has been characterized by intricate data sets, diverse formats, and the need for meticulous manual review and attention to compliance and regulatory standards. The challenges in managing clinical data, even when trying to follow good clinical practices (GXP) ,  often lead to inefficiencies, potential errors, and delays in bringing life-saving drugs or treatments to market rapidly.

Effectively capturing and managing all this multimodal data including (the connected) metadata, labels, and embeddings securely for air-gapped systems can immediately speed up clinical trials, including visualization at scale with high performance and accuracy . With data unified as such, AI algorithms can be deployed to analyze and interpret diverse data types, including medical images, specific patient or cohort information, and even data on the molecular level, offering a more holistic view of the clinical data . This not only streamlines cohort analysis but also enhances the accuracy and efficiency of overall clinical data analysis, ensuring that these life science professionals and researchers can extract valuable insights in a timely manner.

Laboratory and Biological Discoveries

Traditional drug development and general laboratory processes are often characterized by labor-intensive and time-consuming procedures involving large volumes of complex data. Standard laboratory tests and procedures that are often ordered for patients include blood or cellular tissue samples, high resolution imaging, and microscopy  images. These samples can leverage AI models to determine initial predictions on findings. The lab scientists then can have a focused review of the models’ findings and finalize the results either agreeing with prediction or not updating the records appropriately. In either case, the work expected from experts is significantly reduced, allowing them to review data from more patients.

Safeguard Procedures and Quality Control

Everyone wants to deliver high quality care with tests and procedures performed with a high level of certainty and expertise. Unfortunately, with so many possible healthcare options across  large care teams, not correctly following all directions for a patient's unique care needs can easily occur and prove catastrophic.  Multimodal data and AI algorithms can help identify, monitor, and alert when possible issues occur, resulting in improved patient care.

Challenges in Multimodal AI for Life Sciences

Despite the immense potential, challenges persist in deploying multimodal AI effectively in life sciences. Whether in medical imaging, clinical data management, or laboratory use cases, the speed and efficiency gained through multimodal AI contribute to faster identification of patterns, early disease detection, and ultimately, accelerate groundbreaking discoveries in life sciences.

However, as these are emerging areas of research and teams are now being suddenly expected to change their processes at an unprecedented pace, we have learnt of some fundamental data challenges blocking these advances. For instance, lab machines are often not synchronized very well with the AI teams’ infrastructure, and people are forced to share hard drives since file sharing software limits their volumes or charges high costs. They also need to integrate with expert, in-house labeling solutions to capture key details for each image and any associated metadata and embeddings, which results in problems sharing datasets with annotators and conversely, getting annotations back from them in a consistent, and efficient manner. Iterative training on these labeled datasets to include new information also requires tracking dataset versions so they know what changes were made across different versions of their models.  

Basically, as AI is experiencing rapid adoption, some key challenges  remain:

  • Data Complexity and Heterogeneity:
  • Managing diverse data types, including medical images from various sources, patient information, and genomic data.
  • Ensuring seamless integration of data from different sources for comprehensive analysis to create knowledge graphs for valuable insights.
  • Data Security and Compliance:
  • Adhering to strict regulations and standards in handling sensitive patient data.
  • Implementing robust security measures to protect patient privacy and maintain compliance.
  • Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing:
  • Facilitating collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and data scientists with simple interfaces.
  • Overcoming knowledge silos and ensuring effective sharing of insights for collective advancements.
  • Rising Costs to Support Growth:
  • Scaling to large volumes poses challenges, and achieving high performance can be exceptionally difficult in the realm of multimodal data. Cloud costs are on the rise, affecting the cost vs. benefit calculus of multimodal data.
  • Without seamless integration into AI pipelines, people can be forced to duplicate data or manually move data around leading to extra copies that can be cost and time prohibitive at this scale.

Despite advancements in data science and machine learning, the success of AI hinges heavily on reliable and accurate data. All the aforementioned use cases necessitate :

  • Seamlessly integration of diverse data types in a centralized repository in addition to e fficiently and easily storing and organizing continuously generated data. This includes integrating with labeling and curation frameworks in-house or utilizing third-party vendors, as the data often requires annotations.
  • Training machine learning models in an iterative fashion using the chosen, and likely multiple modalities of data to continuously enhance accuracy with the latest data.
  • Implement robust access control and encryption methods to safeguard medical data. This also requires prioritizing data security, ensuring compliance with all regulations and compliance requirements such as running in standards-compliant virtual private cloud (VPC) so data can remain in secure space.
  • Facilitating collaboration among all life science professionals, researchers, and data scientists for improved patient and research outcomes.
  • Enhancing resource efficiency and improving the overall workflow reduces costs and increases productivity and scale. This generates valuable insights or creates relevant datasets, which, in turn, demand consistent indexing and continuous enrichment of all the data.
